Magic Johnson gives $10 million to jobs program for Chicgo's at-risk youth
A targeted jobs program with a proven track record for keeping at-risk youth safe from summer violence is in line for a dramatic expansion, thanks to a $10 million gift from a former NBA great.
Hall-of-Famer Earvin “Magic” Johnson, along with Mark and Kimbra Walter, are partners in Inner City Youth Empowerment LLC.
Their two-year, $10 million gift to the city will triple the size of the program known as “One Summer Chicago Plus” — and provide 5,000 summer jobs for young people at risk of being exposed to violence. The city will contribute $6 million during the same period.
One Summer Chicago Plus is a costly but effective summer jobs program whose 16- to 19-year-old participants are drawn from high schools in high-crime areas.
To qualify for the 25-hour-a-week summer jobs — as well as a mentor, cognitive behavioral therapy and social-skills building — students must first have missed six to eight weeks of high school or been directly involved in the juvenile justice system.
The individual attention doesn’t come cheap. It costs roughly $2,900 per student, nearly triple the $1,000 cost of a traditional summer job.

The Lupe Fiasco Foundation Changes Name To “M.U.R.A.L. (Magnifying Urban Realities and Affecting Lives)”

M.U.R.A.L. focuses on food justice, youth empowerment funding, and the creation and implementation of Hip Hop curriculum.
The Lupe Fiasco Foundation announced yesterday (February 16) that it has changed its name to M.U.R.A.L., an acronym for “Magnifying Urban Realities and Affecting Lives.”
According to a press release, “M.U.R.A.L. will continue to support programs inspired by the early philanthropy of Mr. Wasalu Muhammad Jaco [Lupe Fiasco] and Co-founder Ayesha Jaco. The foundation will also encompass every aspect of the current program initiatives and the legacy of the Jaco family.”
Launched in 2009, The Lupe Fiasco Foundation focuses on food justice, the creation and implementation of Hip Hop curriculum, and youth empowerment funding.
The press release also states that the organization will reveal a new website and logo in the middle of March 2015.
Lupe Fiasco’s fifth studio album, Tetsuo & Youth was released January 20, 2015 on Atlantic Records. The album sold roughly 36,000 copies in its first week. HipHopDX rated the album a 4.5 out of 5.

Gov. Rauner issues medical marijuana licenses
Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner on Monday granted permits for dozens of companies to grow and sell medical marijuana in Illinois, though it will still be several months before patients can legally take the drug
The surprise move came just one week after Rauner said no licenses would be issued until a legal review of the process initiated under Democratic predecessor Pat Quinn was completed. The Rauner administration did not detail Monday how the issue was resolved so quickly, saying only that it conducted an internal review of Quinn’s work and also consulted with Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office, and found numerous problem areas that could open the state to legal action.
Among those problems are what Rauner general counselor Jason Barclay called “arbitrary” scoring provisions under Quinn that all but eliminated some applicants, and applicants that were disqualified without clear reasoning or a chance for companies to respond to concerns.
All told, Rauner’s actions clear the way for 18 cultivation centers to begin growing medicinal pot, with another three applicants undergoing further review. The state will send letters to the selected cultivation centers informing owners they were selected for a permit and have 48 hours to accept the licenses. Final approval requires businesses to pay all related fees, register employees, and prove operators have enough money to build and run the facility.
